Boland arrived in Provincetown in 1991 with a degree in Preservation and, “seeing a need for preservation of Provincetown's architectural heritage,” Boland started his own firm to help the town property owners maintain Provincetown’s history through its buildings. His credits include the new Whaler’s Wharf, the Unitarian Universalist Meeting House, some changes to the Pilgrim Monument, and fittingly, the Schoolhouse Center (where in 1999, he exhibited his painted furniture.)As he became more interested in painting, Boland, primarily self-taught, studied with Carol Whorf Wescott, Jim Peters and Thomas A. D. Watson, continuing to exhibit his work until 2004. That’s when Boland co-founded Far Land Provisions with his husband, Jim Farley.
