John is currently working on a new line of geometric copper wall sculptures in his studio in Marin County, California. His journey as an artist began in photography and filmmaking, taking him to Syracuse University, NY where he earned a BFA in Independent Filmmaking. There he developed a sense of visual composition, movement, and rhythm that he applies to his sculpture practice. In the early 2000’s, he transformed a warehouse near Oracle Park in San Francisco into a thriving community of artists and entrepreneurs, where he spent the next 12 years creating sculptural wall mosaics. While moonlighting as a residential tile contractor, he cut his teeth in the trades collaborating with builders, architects, and interior designers. Highlights in his career include creating an early line of tiles for Clé Tile during its founding, and participating in an artist residency at Autodesk Pier 9, where he learned CNC fabrication techniques, greatly expanding his ability to execute his visions in novel materials. Inspiration for his pieces comes from time spent in the backcountry as well as in the urban landscape. He’s a film buff with an appreciation for the New Hollywood movement of the 1970's and late 1960's. When he’s not in his studio, he can be found mountain biking and training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
