Joel also maintains a relationship with the native tribes of the Sonoran Desert, who have lived there for thousands of years. They originated the art form of ironwood carving, the wood for which comes from the Olneya tesota tree, also known as ironwood or palo fierro in Spanish, and is native to that desert. The tree is slow-growing and produces a hard, dense, dark wood that sinks in water. Sculptors must search for naturally fallen trees to work with as green wood is not suitable for carving.
