Houda Terjuman, a Syrian/Swiss/Moroccan artist based in Barcelona, explores themes of identity, displacement, and the search for stability through her surrealist-inspired paintings and floating sculptures. Her work, often featuring motifs like uprooted trees and homely furniture, reflects her multicultural experiences and the complex, de-territorialized world we live in. Houda Terjuman's artistic practice is deeply shaped by her hybrid migrant identity, a condition often associated with second-generation migrants. With a Syrian father, a Swiss mother, and having been born in Morocco, she identifies as African. The transient nature of both her personal and artistic evolution has opened up compelling ways to engage with representation in art. As a first-generation migrant, Terjuman’s father often emphasized the necessity of integration, asserting that there was no safety net. However, rather than adopting the concept of assimilation, she embraced hybridity—seeing it as a rich intersection of backgrounds, voices, and belongings. Despite an enduring sense of foreignness and potential displacement, Terjuman has gained immense strength from the power of mobility and the freedom derived from multiple roots, languages, and cultures. It is precisely within the delicate space between the promise of a new life in a new place and the nostalgia and loss inherent in migration that her practice is situated. Through this lens, her work explores feelings of floating freedom alongside fear and insecurity. Her sculptures and paintings serve as small, familiar objects that weave narratives. These objects act as carriers of hope and bridges between cultures. An empty chair symbolizes what has been left behind, maintaining a connection to one’s roots. A solitary boat embodies hope, while a floating bridge invites the viewer to forge connections and cultivate empathy toward the unknown.
