For Maria Isabel Bernal Torres, water is life. From Culiacán, Sinaloa, Mexico, Isabel grew up in a family deeply influenced by both visual and musical art. From a very young age, she had a strong interest in drawing, painting, and sculpture. With a close connection with nature, she has always been fascinated by the countryside, the sky, and especially the ocean and water. When she was four years old, a sudden and traumatic loss in her family involving water led her to explore various artistic fields. Drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and even writing became a means of expression in response to her grief. Her perception of water shifted from being synonymous with death, to representing transformation, change, and life. Isabel holds a Bachelor's degree in Visual Arts, with a specialization in Sculpture, from the Autonomous University of Sinaloa (UAS - Universidad Autónoma De Sinaloa). As a young girl, her artistic journey began when she attended painting and drawing courses at the Center for Research and Cultural Development (DIFOCUR), now known as the Instituto Sinaloense De La Cultura (ISIC). There, she had my first exposure to the theoretical and practical foundations of art. As a young adult, Isabel decided to pursue professional studies in this field, enrolling in the Bachelor's program at UAS. She has participated in various group exhibitions, including “Death in Plastic” ("La muerte en la plástica"), “Guides and Roots” ("Guías y Raíces" (2014-2017), and the 60th anniversary of the School of Fine Arts in 2017. Earlier, Isabel had received first prize in the annual portrait drawing competition at that same institute. Her works "Profundidad" and "Madre Agua" earned an honorable mention in the inaugural “Art and Water” ("Arte y Agua") visual arts competition organized by JAPAC in celebration of World Water Day, as part of an itinerant exhibition across the Pacific region. Isabel has also explored other creative avenues, serving as a writer, and delving into photography, where she won second place prize in “The Magic of Water” ("La Magia del Agua") photography contest at the Jardín Botánico Culiacán a few years ago. “Through my artwork, I aim to express my perspective on the significance of water in my life and the world. Para María Isabel Bernal Torres, el agua es vida. Originaria de Culiacán, Sinaloa, México, Isabel creció en una familia profundamente influenciada por el arte visual y musical. Desde muy joven, mostró un fuerte interés por el dibujo, la pintura y la escultura. Con una conexión cercana con la naturaleza, siempre se ha sentido fascinada por el campo, el cielo y especialmente el océano y el agua. Cuando tenía cuatro años, una pérdida repentina y traumática en su familia relacionada con el agua la llevó a explorar diversos campos artísticos. El dibujo, la pintura, la fotografía, la grabación, la escultura e incluso la escritura se convirtieron en medios de expresión en respuesta a su dolor. Su percepción del agua cambió de ser sinónimo de muerte a representar transformación, cambio y vida. Isabel tiene una licenciatura en Artes Visuales, con especialización en Escultura, de la Universidad Autónoma de Sinaloa (UAS). Desde niña, su viaje artístico comenzó cuando asistió a cursos de pintura y dibujo en el Centro de Investigación y Desarrollo Cultural (DIFOCUR), ahora conocido como el Instituto Sinaloense de la Cultura (ISIC). Allí tuvo su primera exposición a los fundamentos teóricos y prácticos del arte. Como adulta joven, Isabel decidió seguir estudios profesionales en este campo, inscribiéndose en el programa de licenciatura en la UAS. Ha participado en diversas exposiciones colectivas, incluyendo “La muerte en la plástica”, “Guías y Raíces” (2014-2017) y el 60 aniversario de la Escuela de Bellas Artes en 2017. Anteriormente, Isabel había recibido el primer premio en el concurso anual de retrato en ese mismo instituto. Sus obras “Profundidad” y “Madre Agua” obtuvieron una mención honorífica en la competencia inaugural de artes visuales “Arte y Agua”, organizada por JAPAC en celebración del Día Mundial del Agua, como parte de una exposición itinerante en la región del Pacífico. Isabel también ha explorado otras vías creativas, desempeñándose como escritora y adentrándose en la fotografía, donde ganó el segundo lugar en el concurso de fotografía “La Magia del Agua” en el Jardín Botánico Culiacán hace algunos años. “A través de mi obra de arte, busco expresar mi perspectiva sobre la importancia del agua en mi vida y en el mundo. Su relevancia y simbolismo en el desarrollo natural humano y animal me inspiran.
