Beth Elliott lives just outside of Asheville, NC. Her art practice pulls from many facets of her life. Her formal education is in biochemistry and landscape architecture. Her biochemistry research focused on the microscopic architecture inside cells that spatially organizes and directs motility. Her design education further investigates spatially important juxtaposition of form and function in carving gardens out of the land macroscopically. And studying art has been through self teaching, intuitive exploration and intentional study. All of these educational foundations heavily influence her visions and forms in clay and in sculpture, but her art is intentionally directed away from the precision that both science and architecture require. To have the freedom to create with abandon and explore with unfettered curiosity is essential to her artwork. Inspired by the process of creating, it is the learning and studying of materials and incorporating their properties and nuances into her pieces is an ongoing part o her work. There is textural significance to her art while creating interpretable as well as abstract forms. Working in series allows her to discover new interactions and concepts texturally and aesthetically in both clay and mixed media.
