John Suazo was born at Taos Pueblo in New Mexico. He has been a full-time sculptor since 1974. Suazo is inspired in part by his late uncle, wood sculptor Ralph Suazo, whose works reflected the people, animals and natural beauty of the Taos Pueblo. John carves pieces that represent his culture and traditions through simplified forms, such as birds, mammals and figurative beings in alabaster, limestone and granite. Suazo attended the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque; the Navajo Community College in Tsaile, Arizona, and the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico. For over thirty years, John Suazo has created stone sculptures. His work is characterized by simplifying forms, mainly figurative human beings, birds and mammals. These subjects all relate to his cultural traditions.
