Calvin Carter was born in Hempstead, Texas, where he gained a love for wildlife and sporting art in the fields with his father and grandfather. Calvin has fond memories of drawing at the dining room table drawing on napkins as a child, competing for the funniest or best drawing with his father, uncle, and grandfather. He won his first National Art contest at the age of seventeen in the Izaak Walton Youth League of America Art contest, and that made him excited for the future. At a local county fair, Carter was discovered by Gib DeLisle and Butch Kissman, who found a way to bring him into a prominent art program for college. Calvin pursued his art career under the late Professor Jerry Newman at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas. Carter went on to graduate from LU with a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Art and then became a High School art teacher. As a returning finalist in the Art Renewal Center Salon, he continued to paint figurative art for some time before turning to focus on his childhood love: wildlife and sporting art. Carter had created numerous Texas Wildlife Stamp prints as well as placing in the Federal Duck Stamp Contest from 2013-2014. In 2015, a mutual friend introduced Calvin to two historians that specialize in the preservation and reproduction of early to mid 1800’s Western History and Native American artifacts, regalia, and more. Through these men, Calvin discovered a passion for learning, preserving, and honoring that history with artwork. Calvin's Western Art has been featured in the American Plains Annual art shows, Southwest Art Magazine, Art of the West, the Bosque Classic and the Pearce Museum's permanent collection. Calvin was blessed to befriend Minoma Littlehawk and Daniel Long Soldiers, who each taught him even more about their ancestral history and what parts of that history they are passionate about preserving for future generations. His sporting art has recently been featured in seven consecutive exhibitions and three annual catalogs with the Paderewski Sportsman's Gallery. His work has been published in various magazines in the Western and wildlife markets, including being featured on the cover of over thirty issues of the Texas Outdoor Magazine. Carter is also a member of the Watercolor Art Society of Houston and the International Guild of Realism. Calvin now lives in Bridge City, Texas, traveling often for research and commissions while he and his wife raise six wonderful children. He enjoys reading, photography, hunting, fishing, sightseeing, and spending time with his family. His mission is to promote continuing art education, wildlife conservation for future generations, and preserving history through extensive research, collaboration, and by creating art.
