Gordon Allen`s work include oils, watercolors, gouache, etchings and illustrations. He grew up loving art and the out- of-doors, and by age twenty, he had embarked on his career as an artist and was illustrating books in the sporting genre for NY publishers. Particularly loving the etchings of Rembrandt, he studied that medium and began selling his etchings, mostly of sporting subjects, in galleries across the US. That freed him up from having to illustrate, allowing him to paint, and he now paints in oil and watercolor en plein air and in the studio. With painting, he loves nothing more than spending the day outside behind the easel and experiencing the world, man-made or natural, in a studied way that is available to few but artists. His etchings are an extension of his illustrating career and are usually done in the studio at a more deliberate pace than his plein air work. He still illustrates on occasion and this fall he will illustrate a new book by historian and author, James West Davidson, "A Little History of the United States" which will be published by Yale University Press. Gordon and his economist wife divide their time between homes in Seattle, WA and Phoenix, AZ.
