A native New Yorker, Richard Lithgow uses oils and etchings as his medium. He has won numerous awards in both areas. His work reflects the influence of the early masters, particularly the 17th century Dutch. Yet, he brings his own unique talent and perspective to each one of his creations. Richard attended Cornell University, studied privately under various artists, and has traveled extensively throughout Europe to further his education. Richard has had years of experience watching and catching fish in lakes, streams, and rivers. His fishing career began at the age of five, when he sat one day for hours on a rickety dock overlooking a quiet lake in New York’s Adirondack Mountain, hooked by the magical, mystical experience of almost catching one sunny (bream) after another never realizing that the fish that kept coming back for more should have looked at least vaguely familiar to him. As a result of these experiences, Richard has managed to capture the color, light, and shimmering beauty of the rainbow trout, as well as other water life. The state of Kentucky recognized the authenticity of his work and honored it with the 1998 Kentucky Trout Stamp. A Pisces, Richard continues fishing, of course, but his other love is taking great care to put those beautiful and magnificent water life on canvas.
