At an early age, John was taught by his parents how to observe nature and translate it into an art form. John started creating at an early age with the guidance of his father Ray, who is a widely respected artist. He continues astute observations of wildlife and the natural environment throughout his many years spent as a fly fishing and big game hunting guide. John received a BFA in sculpture from Northern Illinois University in 1991. His sporting travels throughout North America and New Zealand have provided many research experiences. Water color paintings express the varied environments of his travels, including the rivers of the Rocky Mountains, the colorful aquatic life of the oceans, and the colors and moods of the changing seasons. John’s paintings and sculptures reflect his passion for outdoor sports. His experience as a fly-fishing and hunting guide gives him an intimate relationship with the natural world, which he translates into his art. Through bronze and wood sculptures, John captures his patient and discerning observations of wildlife. The environment, inherent to the animal’s identity, is suggested with a simple gesture. John’s fascination with the dramatic presence of wildlife will forever influence his artwork. His commissioned artwork is appreciated in private and corporate collections throughout the United States, Europe, Africa, and New Zealand. John has placed monuments in public and private collections in Texas, Colorado, California, Illinois, and Costa Rica. He currently resides and has his studio in Northwest Colorado.
