Joan McConaghy is a Providence-based artist whose work is inspired by her extensive travels. Her practice is guided by her surroundings and informed by photographs taken to document the places and emotions felt while observing each new place. Once back in her studio, Joan works to recapture those experiences in her paintings. She explains that, “As an artist, I try to capture a memory, a mood, colorful shapes and inspire thoughtful reflection. I hope you do not spend too much time trying to figure out who or what the painting represents; rather, that you become emotionally involved with the artwork and are able to relate what you see with your own experiences.” Joan’s work features delicate depictions of farmyard animals, seascapes, landscapes, lighthouses, flowers, and still life subjects.
