Artist BioI grew up in a large family of eight brothers and sisters in Vermont. I currently live just outside of Boston. In my travels back and forth from Boston to visit family in the north I often find myself on the small roads looking for interesting farm tractors and classic machines to document and paint. I studied painting and drawing at the Art Institute of Philadelphia 1985 and then RISD, graduating in1988 with a BFA . I have worked for more than 25 years in design in educational publishing. My paintings are in private collections here in New England. Artist StatementI love to paint. I lean toward figurative work, with influences of Winslow Homer, Wayne Thiebaud, Jenny Saville, Lucian Freud, George Bellows (his early work), Antonio López, the Group of Seven, the Ashcan School, John Singer Sargent, Velasquez, Degas, among others...among others. My Process In my work I often focus on objects I’m fond of. The work starts with drawing studies from life and from life size images. (when having a full size model in my studio is not possible) Often I make small color studies of the larger works to test out tone and color combinations. After having a piece knocked together on paper I transfer the drawing’s outline to canvas on which I create an under painting. I dive into the color work on top of the under painting with as much energy I feel coincides with the original impulse in creating the work.
