Born and raised in Charleston, South Carolina, JaQuan Hicks discovered a passion for art early in life. Initially, his approach to creativity was focused on being the loudest and boldest voice in the room. However, everything changed after encountering a quote from Basquiat: “I don’t think about art when I’m working. I try to think about life.” This realization shifted Hick's understanding of art, leading him to see life itself as the ultimate form of artistic expression. A self-taught artist, Hicks embraces the idea that as long as we are alive, we should continuously create. This philosophy is evident in his work, including Bang, a series born from an internal struggle that embodies resilience and determination. In creating Bang, Hicks made the decision to metaphorically put on boxing gloves and fight for success, channeling both personal and universal battles through art.
