Chris Hill grew up in northern Mississippi and looked for a way to leave what he considered to be a close-minded environment. The metal working classes offered by the Tennessee Valley Authority’s Nuclear Power Plant seemed to be one way to move on from Booneville, and Iuka, Mississippi. With a used car, no job – but with an offer to live in a friend's basement – he moved to Chicago where he ultimately studied Fine Art and graduated from the American Academy of Art. Later teaching at the same school. After working in a number of Chicago graphic design firms he launched his own design firm developing logos and marketing materials for clients as varied as Pepsi, Grohe and Ameritech. Working half days as a designer allowed him to fulfill his ambition to become a sculptor – first working nights and weekends – then eventually full time.Combining his Mississippi training as a welder with his exposure to fine art in Chicago, Hill developed a painted metal process that takes advantage of the unique attributes of rigid steel and fluid acrylic paint.Galleries began showing his sculptures and furniture in 1990.Hill’s abstract steel sculptures have been exhibited in shows throughout the United States including SOFA Chicago and New York, Art Miami, Art New York, LA Art Show, Art of Twentieth Century in New York, Palm Beach 3 and the Houston Art Fair. His work is in private collections from Montecito and Palm Springs to Lisbon and Paris and in corporate collections including University of Chicago and Fidelity Investments.
