Adrienne Watts is an experienced visual artist who embarked on her artistic journey in Wilmington, NC in 2018. Since moving to Sarasota in 2022, she's continued her journey, expanding her artistic skills by exploring and mastering the discipline of Woven Art. She's also become an active member of Women Contemporary Artists in Sarasota and served on their board as Exhibition Co-Chair in 2024. In addition, she organized and curated a December 2023 group exhibition at Fogartyville in the Rosemary Arts District. Most recently, she's been admitted for membership in SARTQ, a Sarasota Artist Collective. In 2021, inspiration struck, and she began thinking about the possibility of weaving canvas into artwork. A grant from the North Carolina Arts Council the same year allowed her to explore this idea and create a body of work. Since moving to Sarasota in 2022, she has continued her journey, expanding her artistic skills by refining her work with woven abstracts. Watts’ first solo exhibition in Florida featured seventeen large scale woven abstracts in a six-month long exhibition Weaving Dreams at Art Ovation Hotel in 2024. The woven abstract paintings Watts makes utilize her creative side and her analytical side. The process includes free expression in painting two complementary yet harmonious abstract paintings on unstretched canvas. The methodical weaving of those paintings into a single work of art represents the interconnection of all things and always creates unexpected patterns and results.​​Her award-winning artwork can be found in private collections across the U.S. Artist Statement: My current work in woven canvas paintings invites viewers into a realm of connection, exploration, and unexpected beauty. Each painting in this series originates from two canvases initially marked with paint, graphite, and charcoal to lay the groundwork for composition. Through a transformative process involving paint and other materials, these canvases morph into contrasting yet harmonious artworks. Central to the process is tearing the canvas into strips and interweaving them to form a single piece. This technique creates a captivating checkerboard effect, reflecting life’s interwoven complexities. What distinguishes these paintings is their ability to arouse curiosity and provoke contemplation. Vibrant colors and dynamic compositions lure viewers, prompting them to ponder the mysterious process behind each piece. These paintings celebrate creativity, intuition, and the joy of discovery, urging viewers to embrace curiosity and imagination. It emphasizes gratitude for life’s fleeting moments and the interconnectedness of existence.
