Ramón Bonilla is an artist from Puerto Rico working with painting and large format wall art. From 2015 to 2017 Bonilla completed an art residence at Redline Denver. He is also a recipient of the Insite Fund which is funded by the Andy Warhol Foundation. During his residency at Redline, Bonilla curated "Downshifting", an international show of reductive art that was sponsored in part by the Danish Consulate in Denver. He also curated "(R)evolver" (2016) for Redline's Reach Program. He also participated of two resident art shows, "Monumental" (2016) and "Nice Work If You Can Get It" (2017). During this period at Redline, Bonilla also participated in Denver Architectural Foundation "Doors Open Denver" and Westword “Artopia” presenting pop up murals made out of rice paper tape and was featured on Westword 100 Colorado Creatives. In 2018 Bonilla presented “Kludge City Nice Scenic Views”, an art installation about the housing crisis at The Foothills Art Center in Golden, CO. At the Understudy experimental art space at the Denver Theater District he presented an installation titled “Illuminati DIA”. He also participated in the group shows “In Sight On Site” at the Arvada Art Center for The Arts And Humanities and in“Puerto Rico: Defying Darkness'' at 516 Arts in Albuquerque, NM. “Puerto Rico: Defying Darkness'' was a post hurricane Maria multi-generational group show of Puertorican artists from the island and the diaspora. During the same year, he also participated in a show at Galeria Project Art in Tampico, Mexico and showed new work at Space Gallery in Denver. During 2020 Bonilla produced a temporary wall installation, “AMFRARRT(U)SOBRAID”, at the Denver Museum of Art which presented social issues statistics depicted through geometric shapes, text and lines made with paper tape and wall vinyl material. In 2021 Bonilla participated in a group show at CICA Museum, Gyeonggi-do, KR and also completed various wall art commissions including a geometric linear wall design made with one acrylic marker for Market Station Denver. Bonilla's work has been recognized by The Government Development Bank Of Puerto Rico, Museum Of Contemporary Art Puerto Rico, Saatchiart.com and Artslant.com. It has been included in Artnet.com, Artsy.com, Puerto Rico Art News and Autogiro. His mural work has been commissioned for a number of Denver, CO sites such as The Gates Building, Nexus BSP, the Bonfils-Stanton Foundation Office, Rose Community Foundation and Stanley Marketplace and also by Absolut Art and Muros Chicago. Ramón Bonilla has been featured on 5280’s Home magazine as one of the “The Five Local Artists To Watch And Collect”. The artist has been represented by Michael Warren Contemporary and currently is represented by Space Gallery Denver where he has participated in multiple solo and group shows. As a member of the international art group Direction/Instruction, Bonilla has shown his work at Paradigm Gallery Philadelphia, Space Gallery Denver and S16 Montreal. He also completed a multimedia room environment for Meow Wolf Denver titled “Aztec Camera”. In 2022 Bonilla had a solo show at Alto Gallery, “Fiat Lux” where he completed a wall to wall paper tape installation. In 2023 he had a solo show at the Arvada Center, “The Boundary Lines Have Fallen In Pleasant Places”, where he completed a paper tape installation that was more than 60’ long. In the summer of 2024 Bonilla showed his current series of works titled “Miradero” at the Ely Center of Contemporary Art in New Haven, CT. Currently Bonilla is participating of a 6 month art residency in rural CT.
