Parker J. Pfister is an American artist working primarily in photography and filmmaking. It’s easy to look at his fine art photography and believe it to be a product of AI. Instead, Pfister replicates his photography and sprinkles it with old-school studio and darkroom magic to produce his signature, surrealist, conceptual artwork. The Asheville-based photographer attributes his curiosity and dreams, both conscious and subconscious, as the guides for the majority of his work. In “Convergence”, Pfister tears photographs, and layers and juxtaposes them with his other prints from different times, places, people, and genres, along with foreign objects. After he plays with lighting, exposure, and his alternative film and digital processing, the entire new visual expression is photographed once more, creating an entirely new storyline. To describe his process, Pfister has coined the term “photografting.” A once straightforward image is now juxtaposed or layered with another to become a more complex conversation. The Asheville Museum of Art Gala displayed some of Pfister’s work as a 2015 fundraiser for its latest expansion. His work was also included in the 2020 Favorite Photo Exhibition by Lenscratch, and he was a Lens Cultures Editors Choice in 2021 and 2023.Two of Pfister’s images were selected by the Lucie Foundation to hang in an unprecedented 100-image group exhibition at the United Nations’ COP 21 in Paris, France. Those images would go on to the C40 Mayors Summit in Mexico City, “Beyond the Air We Breathe” at The Royal Photographic Society in Bangkok, Thailand; and “The Climate Smart Evolution” in Bologna, Italy. Most recently, Pfister was selected as one of the 200 photographers for the 2024 Critical Mass Jury competition by Photolucida.
