The mechanical sculptures that Todd Double creates are the continuation of his investigation into materials, movement, and form. A Pittsburgh native, Todd combines industrial and natural elements and forms in his sculpture. He attended The Pennsylvania State University where he received a BFA focusing on painting. His paint began to consume space rather than depicting it as he became more interested in the materiality of paint. He went on to earn an MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts where his work grew off the wall and took on a sculptural form. Although he completed graduate school, Todd embodies the essence of a lifelong learner. His curiosity led him to learn more about electrical and mechanical engineering to bring life to his work. Some of his quirky works are set in motion by a turn of the crank, others by the flip of a switch. Regardless of how they operate, the pieces invite engagement with the viewer. Crafted from everyday materials like rhododendron roots and VCR parts, Todd's pieces are a testament to his resourcefulness and creativity.
