Jimi Gleason is a Southern California-based artist known for his innovative use of industrial materials to create highly reflective and light-reactive paintings. His signature process involves applying silver nitrate—a material typically used in mirror-making—onto acrylic-coated canvases, producing luminous surfaces that shift with the viewer’s movement and ambient light. These works function as enigmatic mirrors, transforming with their environment and encouraging a meditative viewing experience. For over a decade, Gleason has refined this unique approach, performing what he describes as an act of alchemy: treating his canvases with a chemical mixture and spraying them with silver nitrate to achieve a sterling metallic finish. The result is a dynamic visual space where light, form, and color are projected from the outside world into the work itself. Born and raised in Southern California, Gleason earned his B.A. in Fine Art from the University of California, Berkeley in 1985. He later spent time in New York before returning to the West Coast, where he worked as a studio assistant to renowned abstract painter Ed Moses, whose influence is evident in Gleason’s experimental spirit and commitment to surface exploration.
