Curt Brill, born in 1952 in the Bronx, New York, discovered his passion for art while studying at Cornell University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Design. Early on, he was drawn to ceramics, silkscreen, and drawing, but it was sculpture that ultimately captured his focus. After experimenting with clay, he began casting in bronze in 1980, developing a distinctive approach to figurative work that blends movement, stillness, and a sense of gentle humor. His forms often express vulnerability and calm, shaped by both a nurturing upbringing and his experiences volunteering in mental health and rehabilitation centers during his early career.Brill is deeply motivated by a desire to uncover and communicate the hidden human spirit. His work, though rooted in classical tradition, embraces imperfection and individuality, often portraying relaxed, introspective figures that evoke connection and authenticity. Working primarily in clay, wax, plaster, and bronze, he emphasizes form and gesture to express internal emotional states, capturing both the uniqueness of the individual and the universality of human experience.Throughout his career, Brill has received numerous awards and honors, including the Tucson Museum of Art Purchase and Exhibition Awards, the Long Island Craftsman Honorable Mention, the University of Arizona Award of Merit, and Best of Show in Kumamoto, Japan. His work is held in prominent museum collections across the country and continues to be celebrated for its warmth, subtlety, and emotional depth. Museum ExhibitionsUniversity of Arizona Museum of Art, Tucson, AZ (2004)Tucson Museum of Art, Tucson, AZ (1977, 1984, 1993 solo shows; featured in group exhibitions through the 2000s)Grounds For Sculpture, Hamilton, NJ (collection inclusion)Cornell University, Ithaca, NY (undergraduate exhibitions, collection)Mint Museum of Art, Charlotte, NC (collection)Curt Brill’s trajectory—from foundational design and ceramics at Cornell to celebrated bronze sculptor—highlights a practice grounded in human connection, tactile intimacy, and a resilient, heartfelt approach to craft.
