Steve Webster discovered his love of the manual interplay between material and construction at the age of 16 when building boats, a process that consisted of conceptualizing, drawing and carving wood. He was encouraged early by his prominent high school art teacher and artist Campbell Scott to formulate his own voice. In his mid-20s he worked in a storefront in downtown Vancouver beginning a rich relationship with clay, wood, steel and sculptural work.Making things became as natural to the young artist as breathing and was soon enhanced by his passion for articulating the concepts in his mind through to physical manifestation. The challenge of creating work from a sheer idea coupled with a brilliant engineering mind intrigued by physics started to inform a strong body of sculptural work.He went on to study jewelry making and woodwork at the Sheridan School of Design in Missisauga, Ontario followed by a brief stint at the Ontario College of Art. He then studied bronze, stone and clay at the Capilano College in Vancouver, BC.In 1992, he moved to the Coachella Valley, falling in love with the California desert. Steve currently lives and works in Pinyon, California located in a nearby mountain region above the Coachella Valley.
