In painting, sculpture, photography, glass, and works on paper, Mary Chomenko Hinckley transliterates personal experience and sociopolitical context into thought-provoking visual statements that engage viewers conceptually and emotionally. Her artworks are often sumptuously beautiful, even when they address challenging themes. As art critic Richard Speer has written, “Her paintings are abstracted narratives, weaving stories with autobiographical and thematic overtones. Behind every brushstroke is a backstory.” Hinckley, who earned a B.A. degree in art from Montclair State University and an M.F.A. from California College of the Arts, has enjoyed a rewarding career that has spanned nearly five decades. Her art practice is informed by her history as the daughter of Ukrainian immigrants, as well as her deep intellectual curiosity, keen observation, and a passion for world travel and cultural exchange, which imbues her work with global perspective. Widely exhibited and included in private, institutional, and corporate collections, she has received important commissions and created public art that deftly activates architectural space. She is the subject of a career-retrospective monograph, Material Evolution, published in 2018 by Lucia | Marquand (Seattle).
