Patrick Glander received his undergraduate degree in Teaching Secondary Education: Social Studies at the University of Minnesota, Duluth, 2011 – 2015. Although he enjoyed drawing in his youth and was encouraged to develop his natural ability by his grandmother he never intended to become an artist — until he met Jeffrey and Brock Larson who were in the process of renovating a Catholic church to become the home of what is now the Great Lakes Academy of Fine Art in Duluth, MN.At the time Glander was working for Northern Bedrock Historic Preservation Corps learning historic trades with local craftsman such as plastering, log cabins, window glazing, etc. the Larsons commissioned the group to restore the plaster walls in the church and later offered Glander a job to continue working on the building after the corps left. Over time Larson began to identify Glander’s work ethic as one that might also make for a good painter. He was disciplined, self-motivated, passionate, and had the willingness to take leaps of faith in his creativity. Larson suggested to Glander that he consider a career in art and to submit his portfolio to him.Subsequently Glander was accepted into the full time program at GLAFA and excelled in the classical painting and drawing programs. Glander completed the four year apprenticeship at GLAFA in 2020.Patrick Glander’s greatest artistic influence is the 19th century French sculptor, François Auguste René Rodin. He admires not just his art but his tenacity and purpose and enjoys reading his philosophies on art. Glander also looks towards the work of Velazquez, Manet, Whistler, Levitan and the Boston School painters such as Dennis Miller Bunker and Edmund Tarbell for inspiration.Patrick Glander currently lives and maintains a studio in Duluth, MN.
