Jack Dohallow, a wood-turning artist, transforms wood into captivating pieces of art and utility. Inspired by the fluidity of glass art and the aesthetics of Southwest pottery, Jack skillfully incorporates these influences into his work. In his studio, Jack uses a wood lathe to spin and carve wood, creating unique and intricate designs. The process of preparing wood, discovering its colors, textures, and smells, and designing one-of-a-kind pieces is a journey he finds immensely enjoyable. From local and imported wood, Jack crafts bowls, small boxes for secret treasures, platters, vases, and sculptures, allowing the natural characteristics of each piece of wood to guide his designs. Jack's passion for woodturning began in high school. In 2003, he had the remarkable opportunity to work as a production wood turner on the scenic Oregon Coast, honing his skills daily. Joining the American Association of Woodturners was a pivotal moment in his career, allowing him to learn from professional woodturners like Graeme Priddle, Trent Bosch, and Barbara Dill, who have had a significant influence on his work. Although Jack used to be reluctant about coloring wood, he has come to appreciate that there are times when colored wood can enhance the beauty and uniqueness of a piece. In the right hands, and with the right vision, color can transform a piece of wood into an extraordinary work of art. Jack Dohallow’s artistry is a testament to his dedication and the inspiration he draws from various forms of art, making each piece a unique and captivating creation. His work continues to inspire and captivate those who appreciate the beauty and intricacy of woodturning.
