KATHRINE ALLEN Kathrine Allen is a visual artist living in Jackson, Georgia. She creates beautiful collage paintings using a unique process of layering linography, Unryu "cloud dragon" rice paper, acrylic paint and hand stitched embroidery floss on canvas. Artist's Statement:The process in building these pieces starts with pulling a simple relief print on paper. I carve linoleum blocks. These carved blocks are then rolled with ink, and printed individually on Unryu "cloud dragon" rice paper andvintage pattern tissue. These prints are hung to dry and are sorted to become my palette. When I assemble a piece, I often begin with a loose, washy underpainting. Breaking up the picture plane and the placement of cool color. Then, dozens of prints are trimmed, and spliced together to achieve big areas of repeat pattern. This is repeated in layers, building a composition that hopefully brings the viewer to a place between quiltmaking and aerial abstract landscape. Finally, most pieces are finished with stitching. Lines of embroidery floss bring one more layer of color, and a twist on texture. I began down this road looking for a solution to bring patterns into painting. The patterns quickly became the painting. The use of sewing pattern tissue works with suggestions of stitching. I enjoy connecting the dots from fine art to needlework, and blurring the line. I hope these pieces help the viewer experience memories of farmhouse quilts, handmade things, and landscape.
