Born and raised in Denmark with a rich and diverse heritage, Maya spent her childhood summers exploring the mountainous Balkans, visiting family, and traveling across Europe. These experiences cultivated a profound connection to nature, inspired by the splendor of the landscapes she encountered. A contemporary painter working primarily in acrylic, Maya’s work revolves around the themes of humanity and nature, often embodied as one. Her signature “Wisdom Keepers” are portraits of women surrounded by bold, graphic floral patterns—vibrant and alive with color. Her creations reflect a delicate balance between control and spontaneity, drawing inspiration from her Balkan, American Southwest, and Scandinavian heritage, as well as folk art traditions from around the world. Maya’s artistic journey has been shaped by both her travels and her time living in cultural hubs like Copenhagen, London, and Berlin. Eventually, she chose to embrace a quieter life in the countryside, tending to her garden, working with her horses, and hiking through nature. This way of life deepens her connection to and study of the natural world, which remains a constant source of inspiration for her art. Her work has been showcased in group exhibitions from London to New York, featured in publications, and collected by art lovers worldwide. Maya’s art is largely painted in acrylics, either on Nordic birch or on canvas. She creates by starting with a feeling, or building a message around a main character, then expands the composition around this focal point, setting the stage and supporting the narrative. The colours are bright, warm and vibrant, exuding life. Mayas art has been shown in several group exhibitions from London to new York, has appeared in books, and in private collections worldwide. “In my art I work with the concept of a new type of world leader.World leaders that, like our ancestors and indigenous peoples, understand that naturedoes not need us for its existence, but that we in fact are dependent on it for our survival.I hope to invoke in the viewer a sense of empowerment, reminding us that we have an opportunity every day toact in ways that support and care for our planet, and by doing so, enrich and enhance our own existence as individuals. I visualize what these new type of world leaders, or “wisdom keepers” might look like, and then I drape them with nature. A vibrant, bold, graphic nature of floral patterns, inspired by my mixed Balkan/American, and Scandinavian heritage as well as folk art from around the world".
