Ian Norris begins his artistic journey by creating a series of observational drawings and small paintings. He then returns to the studio to paint larger works from memory, using these smaller studies as reference points. Rather than simply capturing the visual aspects of a landscape, Norris aims to convey the emotional experience of being present in a specific place. This fusion of emotion and abstraction is a hallmark of his work. Norris is deeply interested in the physicality of paint. His larger paintings often involve multiple layers of paint, building up texture and depth. By scraping back sections of the paint surface, he reveals a complex interplay of colour, texture, and depth, mirroring the intricate nature of the landscape itself. As Norris states, "I prefer to work with familiar materials and subjects, exploring the human figure and the landscape. I often return to the same motif over extended periods."
