Madison, WI ARTIST STATEMENTMy recent work includes “structured paintings” with multiple components that investigate the idea of continuation and connection, using the art media that works best for my exploration. I am inspired by poetry, often finding sparks of recognition as to how I experience life and the making of my art.“Sky,” written by Wislawa Szymborska, has been one of those sparks. SKY (excerpt) I should have begun with this: the sky.A window minus sill, frame, and panes. An aperture, nothing more, but wide open. I don’t have to wait for a starry night,I don’t have to crane my neckto get a look at it.I’ve got the sky behind my back, at hand, and on my eyelids. The sky binds me tightand sweeps me off my feet. Grainy, gritty, liquid, inflamed, or volatilepatches of sky, specks of sky, gusts and heaps of skyThe sky is everywhere, even in the dark beneath your skin. From the smallest speck of air to the vastness of the universe, my art suggests an axis for thoughts in which one can be wholly present. A place of reaching out and of reaching in to the mysterious riddle where one can find the silent and ever-changing space of time.
