Charly Palmer was born in Fayette, Alabama, and raised in Wisconsin. He completed his studies at the American Academy of Art and the School of the Art Institute in Chicago. Palmer has taught design, illustration, and painting at Spelman College. He currently resides in Atlanta, Georgia, with his wife, Karida Brown, and their two pugs, Brownie and Blu. With over thirty years of experience, Charly Palmer's art speaks for itself. His paintbrush serves as a Griot, telling rhythmic, visual stories that reflect African ancestry and contemporary experiences. Each painting challenges viewers to look deeply and reconsider their perceptions. Palmer has a remarkable ability to document the intricacies of Blackness through depth, patterns, symbols, and textures. It's easy to forget that he starts with a blank canvas. His application of acrylic paint creates a unique aesthetic that transcends traditional boundaries. Recently, Charly was commissioned by the United States Postal Service (USPS) to create the 47th edition of the Black Heritage stamp series honoring the late Judge Constance Baker Motley. He also co-authored *The New Brownies Book: A Love Letter to Black Families*, which won the 2024 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work – Non-Fiction. In 2020, Palmer illustrated the cover art for John Legend's Grammy Award-winning studio album *Bigger Love*. That same summer, he was selected to design the July 2020 cover for *Time Magazine*, focusing on the "America Must Change" issue. This issue included several of his illustrations, including portraits of George Stinney Jr. and James Baldwin, paired with American iconography. His work was noted for its beauty and somberness, and he was chosen for the cover based on his twenty years of experience addressing the subject of race. Charly Palmer's artwork can be found in both private and public collections, including those of JP Morgan Chase, Microsoft, Atlanta Life Insurance, McDonald’s Corporation, Miller Brewing Company, the Coca-Cola Company, and Vanderbilt University. His previous work, *His Story*, which belonged to the estate of Maya Angelou, was auctioned by Swann Gallery in 2015. Palmer was also commissioned to create artwork for the 1996 Olympics and for the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau. In 2016, he produced original artwork to commemorate Fisk University’s 150th anniversary, and in 2017, he completed a similar project for Howard University.
