Sleep hath its own world, and a wide realm of wild reality; and dreams in their development have breath, and tears, and tortures, and the touch of joy. -Lord Byron In the realm of reality, we accept that certain facts are indisputable, and we refer to the world as it exists, independent of our view and perceptions, encompassing the laws of nature and everything objectively observed or experienced. My work is interwoven with my personal chronology, narratives, and meditations on the natural world. I like to think of these works as layering time. As the viewer shifts positions, the light changes, and the luster of the jewel-like surface fluctuates, exposing layers not immediately seen. I use sheets of hand-embossed and patinated copper, antique tin, paper, and canvas, layering them with paint, drawing, print and pattern. Materials collaged together with various nails and tacks on wood panel, literally connecting the past with the present though contemporary processes and aged materials. As a visual storyteller, I weave together personal stories and internalized landscapes. The geometric arrangement of the compositional elements is not unlike quilts women pieced together as part of a universal, spiritual, and domestic experience for ages. My thoughts go daily to the invisible nature of the environmental problems we hear about, and the complex situation of a transforming landscape caused by climate change. In the Realm of Wild Reality, I give you images as tools to question the myth of landscapes we feel we know and a grid that locks them into place. Although the light, and the elements look true, I invite you to look again. Earth functions as pigment, image, and solid ground, but in today’s changing world will these paintings serve as a myth of a purer past? Enter this realm and dream.
