Growing up in Southern California, the artist developed a deep appreciation for the diverse landscapes of mountains, ocean, and desert, which became sources of endless inspiration. During their training in painting and printmaking in the 1960s, they were captivated by the abstraction that defined the art scene of the time. Following their formal education, they sought to blend the techniques acquired through their studies with the optical delights found in the natural world surrounding them.In the early 1970s, the artist relocated to Tennessee, where they fell in love with the nearby forested Appalachian Mountains. This breathtaking landscape increasingly became a favored subject of their artistic expression. Their oil painting process reflects a unique approach that combines the use of brushes to build up layers of color with the technique of rubbing off small, fingerprint-sized areas using rags, revealing the vibrant hues of their patchwork underpainting. This method of adding and subtracting allows them to convey the complexity, mystery, and richness inherent in the natural subjects they paint. The artist views the materials used in their work as gifts from the earth, and through their painting process, they aim to transform these materials into evocative images that celebrate the beauty of the natural world. They hope that the dominant impression left on viewers is one of wonder and reverence for creation.Edward Kellogg developed his early artistic interests studying in the children’s program at the Philadelphia Art Institute before moving to San Diego, California. In college he studied painting for three years at Wheaton College in Illinois, after which he transferred to San Diego State University, receiving a BA in art in 1966 and an MA in painting and printmaking in 1968. After a year of public school teaching and two years in the U.S. Army, he worked and studied under Dutch artist Henk Krijger at Patmos Workshop and Gallery in Toronto, Canada. From 1973 to 2010, Kellogg taught at Covenant College on Lookout Mountain, Georgia. He is currently Emeritus Professor of Art at Covenant College and actively works in his Chattanooga, Tennessee, studio. Kellogg has had more than 40 solo shows of his oil paintings, silk-screen, and relief prints in galleries throughout the United States as well as in Canada and the Netherlands. His most recent solo exhibits have been at Mason Fine Art Gallery in Atlanta, GA; the Marietta-Cobb Museum of Art in Marietta, GA; and Lee University in Cleveland, TN. His work has been exhibited in numerous group shows including an exhibit of Art from Appalachia titled "More Than Land or Sky" in the National Museum of American Art in Washington, D.C. Kellogg’s paintings of the Tennessee landscape are included in many private and corporate collections nationwide, as well as in more than 30 hospitals and five Southern art museums.
