Madison, WI ARTIST STATEMENTCarolyn Spears is a multimedia artist using experimental methods to create work contending with time, precarity, and positionality in one’s own environment. Her work is influenced by material poetics and phenomena of the natural world. In the “Glass Rock” series, the glacial geology of Wisconsin is directly implemented to create each sculpture. While the glass is hot and malleable, glacial stones such as red granite are pressed and rolled into the glass, creating texture and detail. Carolyn is interested in the mineral qualities and shared visual language of glass, rocks, and ice. BIOGRAPHYCarolyn has exhibited work throughout the United States, including Manifest Gallery (Cincinnati, OH), Foci Minnesota Center for Glass Arts (Minneapolis, MN) and the Delaware Contemporary (Wilmington, DE). Carolyn holds a BFA from the University of Louisville, and a Master’s of Fine Art degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Currently, she works as a technician in the Glasslab at UW-Madison.
