I’m a colourfield artist in Toronto who loves to create large luminous works that add a spark of joy and beauty to people’s lives.I usually begin the process by stripping down the subject matter to its essence and applying multiple layers of transparent colour. Over time, the colours interact, overlap and coalesce, creating a sense of depth and interest.I work in oils, taking advantage of their unique lustre, richness and long drying time. My process is gradual and deliberate. A piece can take weeks or sometimes even months to complete.In this fast-paced world where everyone seems to be busy being busy or chasing the next big thing, I’d like to see my work as an escape from all of the hustle and bustle—a place where time slows down and even stands still, allowing viewers a moment of reflection or quiet contemplation.To paraphrase the King of Colour Fields, Mark Rothko, my hope is that viewers experience the same range of emotions standing in front of one of my works that I do creating them.Largely self-taught, I’ve studied art and art history at the Toronto School of Art and Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. In 2019, I was awarded a grant to the Chateau d’Orquevaux Residency Program in France. My works hang in boardrooms and living rooms in Canada and the U.S.When I’m not making messes in the studio, you can find me hanging out with my wife and our two sons and dogs, getting lost in a good book, playing piano (badly), or cheering on the Raptors.
