John Flores is a contemporary ceramic artist who makes things that shouldn't exist but feel completely familiar— a cactus with watching eyes, a bloom that holds a face, toes emerging from beneath a sculptural cactus form. His sculptures sit at the edge of recognition, close enough to the natural world to feel true, strange enough to make you look twice. Then a third time. Using traditional hand-building techniques, combined with contemporary surface and glazing approaches, he creates ceramic sculptures that are otherworldly and grounded in everyday experience. Subtle details create moments of familiarity within the fantastical, blurring boundaries between terra, flora, and fauna. His work reflects a belief in the interconnectedness of living systems. Nature appears not as backdrop or symbol but as an active presence—one that parallels personal experience. His sculptures suggest narratives of growth, transition, and self-discovery, shaped by observation and lived moments. Through clay, Flores creates forms that speak to transformation as an ongoing state, holding traces of change and adaptation, offering quiet reflections on how identity shifts over time. Flores received his B.F.A. with a focus in ceramics from California State University, Fullerton in 2019. He is based in Yucca Valley, California.
