Janice Yvonne Kennedy, born in 1941, spent her early years in Harbins Community, Georgia, working as a sharecropper. Born fourth of six children, she became acquainted with hard work at a young age, picking cotton in the fields. Despite leaving education after the ninth grade, her pursuit of artistic expression wasn't hindered. Janice is now recognized as a self-taught artist whose faith deeply influences her creativity.A born-again Christian, Janice begins each painting with a simple, yet profound question, "Lord, what would you have me paint today?" This spiritual dialogue gives her work a unique dimension, bringing an insightful perspective to her artistry. Janice's creative repertoire spans various mediums - from making quilts and painting furniture to crafting floral arrangements and loofah sponge dolls. Yet, her favorite artistic medium is acrylics on Bristol board.Working from her kitchen table in Georgia, where she now resides with her second husband, Janice often utilizes the natural sunlight to illuminate her work, sometimes turning her paintings upside down for a different viewpoint. Although physically challenged, Janice finds her art a therapeutic expression, allowing her life experiences to transform into creative pieces. She hopes that her art, which turns "nothing into something," brings joy to viewers, just as it brings fulfillment to her life.
