Micius Stephane (1912 – 1996) was a self-taught Haitian artist known for his vibrant and naive paintings. Born in the coastal village of Bainet, Stephane initially pursued painting as a hobby while working as a shoemaker. However, upon the establishment of the Centre d’Art, he relocated to Port-au-Prince to fully immerse himself in his artistic passion. His early works depicted bustling marketplaces and village scenes with a robust and earth-toned palette. As his career progressed, Stephane introduced more vivid colors into his compositions while maintaining his childlike and naive artistic vision. His artwork can be found in notable collections such as the Musee d’Art Haitien du College Saint Pierre in Port-au-Prince, the Milwaukee Museum of Art, and the Detroit Institute of Art. Stephane's contribution to the Haitian naive tradition is celebrated and recognized in exhibitions like "The Naive Tradition: Haiti" at the Milwaukee Art Center in 1974.
