Gabriela González Leal (Mexico City, 1981) Is a visual artist and graduate of ENPEG "La Esmeralda". She lives and works in Mexico City. Her artistic practice bridges traditional and contemporary techniques, delving into themes such as childhood, play, power, daily life, and landscape—creating a dialogue between past and present that challenges her perception of the world.A significant part of her work involves the transformation of demonetized banknotes into art pieces that challenge conventional ideas of value and economy. By intervening in these discarded objects, she recontextualizes them as cultural and social narratives, exploring identity, memory, and transience. Her pieces invite viewers to reconsider what is valuable, find beauty in the obsolete, and reflect on the human stories interwoven with these fragments of paper. Her work has been featured in international projects like Money for Nothing (France) and Banknote Art Concept (Australia), and she has completed an artist residency in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Gabriela was nominated for the 12th “Senefelder” International Lithography Prize in Germany and was a finalist in prestigious contests such as the International Engraving Contest "Alfara" (Spain), IX International Miniature MajdanArt (Serbia), the 1st Biennial of the Volcanoes (Mexico), the 8th Alfredo Zalce National Biennial, and the 3rd “Dr. Alfonso Pérez Romo” Visual Arts Contest in Aguascalientes. She has received multiple grants from FONCA’s Young Creators program and FOCAEM. With over 10 solo exhibitions and more than 60 group shows, her work has been exhibited in Mexico, Portugal, the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, Argentina, Serbia, Spain, Uruguay, Chile, Panama, and Cuba. Her pieces are held in notable collections including the Bank of Mexico, the Zuckerman Museum of Art (USA), the Historical Museum of El Peñol (Colombia), and the Sonora Museum (Mexico). For Gabriela, the creative process is a meditative act—a space for exploration, research, and play. Through it, she builds a unique visual language that encourages viewers to reflect on their own realities and the layers of meaning hidden within the everyday.
