Josi Callan lives for art like no other. Devoting her life to the visual arts, Josi has developed a multi-dimensional perspective on the creative process. She has been (and is) an artist, museum director, curator, and executive of numerous nonprofit organizations in the art world. As Founding Director of Tacoma’s world-famous Museum of Glass, she oversaw its initial six years of operation, leaving to become the Director/CEO of Paul Allen’s Experience Music Project (now known as MoPOP – the Museum of Pop Culture). Prior to coming to the Northwest, she was director of the San Jose Museum of Art. Born in Great Britain, she gained her enthusiasm for painting from her father, who was also an artist. Beginning with painting in her teens, she continued through college and began her career as a museum professional, retiring in 2009. Callan is a graduate of The California State University Domingues Hills with a B.A. in Studio Art and Art History and an M.A. in Behavioral Sciences. She studied art at The Art Students League of New York, The Seattle Artists League, Scottsdale Artists' School, Sedona Arts Center, and privately with individual instructors. Josi's lifelong love of nature is the primary focus for her art. Inspired by what she sees—a sunlit path, waterscapes beneath clear blue skies, a newly opened rose, a disappearing trail, and all present numerous possibilities. She aims to create a bit of magic with each painting. "I am an intuitive painter, deeply inspired by nature and the ever-changing beauty of my garden. My work reflects the energy, color, and vibrancy of spring and summer, bringing to life bold, expressive landscapes and whimsical, dynamic florals that embody love, loss, and joy. Using vivid, striking colors, I strive to capture movement and the raw essence of nature. My process is layered and fluid—I often wipe away and restart, allowing the underpainting to emerge as part of the final piece. This organic approach creates unexpected moments of magic, where past and present brushstrokes intertwine, adding depth and spontaneity to each painting." -- Josi Callan Her work is represented in collections all around the country. She is a juried member of Oil Painters of America, Arizona Art Alliance, Peninsula Art League, and has participated in numerous juried exhibitions. In 2019, Josi received an Honorable Mention for her painting Alden’s Road from The Art Students League of New York. Her painting, The Only Way Out is Always Through, was selected by the Gig Harbor Garden Tour to represent the tour in 2023. Her painting, Road to Nowhere, received a Juror Award at the 2023 Peninsula Art League Open Juried Show. Since retiring from business, Josi has divided her time between Manhattan and the Pacific Northwest, focused on her passion for making art. She works primarily in oils and water-based media.
