Keri Kimura explores color through many-layered paintings that shift between landscape and abstraction to explore memory and the subconscious. She studied painting at Smith College, the Glasgow School of Art, and the New York Studio School. Her work has recently been exhibited at Nahcotta Gallery, Portsmouth, NH (2021), The Golden Foundation for the Arts, New Berlin, NY (2020); and The Painting Center, New York, NY (2019). Kimura moved to Southwest Harbor, Maine in 2015 where she lives and works. "I’m fascinated by the unexpected and sublime things light can do: the blue of a flame or a street light reflecting off water on pavement at the right hour. We live on an island often bathed in light that feels unique to this place. The sun dips into the sea and leaves streaks of unnameable color in the water. Liquid silvers and neon blues. Or else, at sunset the sky can flash hot fusha, then violet, then gold. I often think about painting as a record of these experiences of color. Ephemeral color. Color you aren’t sure you really could have seen. I’m interested in transcribing this experience of the intangible into the physical material of paint."
