Julie Nangala Robertson is a prominent Warlpiri artist born in 1973 in Yuendumu, Northern Territory, Australia. She was taught to paint by her mother, the esteemed artist Dorothy Napangardi, a leading figure in the contemporary Aboriginal art movement. Julie has been painting with Warlukurlangu Artists since the late 1990s.Julie has developed a unique style that combines traditional storytelling with contemporary visual elements, focusing on Mina Mina Dreaming and Pirlinyanu, her traditional country. Mina Mina is a profoundly important women’s site where ancestral women with magical powers transformed the landscape and danced the world into being. Julie’s paintings trace the movement of these ancestral women and the tracks they left on the sand as they danced across the country. Her work is renowned for intricate dot patterns and vibrant colours, capturing the rich cultural heritage and stories of her Warlpiri ancestry. In 2023, Julie's painting "Mina Mina" won the General Painting Award at the Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards (NATSIAA). This is the same award her mother had been a finalist in multiple times and was awarded the overall prize in 2001. When she took to the stage, she spoke in Warlpiri, saying, “My mother stood on this stage, now I am standing on this stage. I am painting in her memory. She is walking alongside me. I am walking in her footsteps.”Awards and Recognition:2023: Winner of the General Painting Award at the Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards (NATSIAA) for her work "Mina Mina".
