Toh Gouttenoire’s photography is a study in contrast—between structure and spontaneity, precision and play. A lifelong image-maker, he first fell in love with photography through film, then refined his craft through art school, film school, and years of traveling before finally settling in Costa Rica. Though his commercial photography pays the bills, his personal work is where the real magic happens—a place where he steps just slightly outside his professional lens to explore something deeper, more instinctual. His "Pixels" series exemplifies this approach, deconstructing images into their core elements—stripping color down to its essence while letting the black-and-white skeleton of the subject remain. It’s a process of trial and error, of layering and refining, of pushing and pulling until something just clicks. His work is bold, graphic, and intentional, but never overworked—he stops when he feels the balance is right, not when perfection is reached. For Toh, nature is both subject and sanctuary. In a world that moves fast, his images offer a moment of stillness, a reassurance that beauty can be found in simplicity. His style is raw yet refined, instinctive yet structured, always evolving. After 25 years in Costa Rica, he’s no longer just a traveler passing through—he’s almost Tico at this point and waiting on the final paperwork to make it official. In the meantime, he’ll keep shooting, experimenting, and creating—because, as he puts it, there’s always “way more to come.” Sol Gallery is excited to welcome his unique perspective behind the lens, bringing fresh energy to the space. We can’t wait to see how his work continues to evolve, and we’re honored to be part of his ever-unfolding creative journey.
