Alixandra Martin (b. 1976, Sarasota, FL) is an American artist known for her dynamic large-scale works, blending figurative and landscape elements with expressive movement. Working across multiple genres and media, she primarily employs acrylic and spray paint for murals, while utilizing oil and charcoal on canvas for her fine art practice. Her mural work spans internationally, with completed projects in São Paulo, Toronto, the Florida Keys, San Francisco, and Southwest France. She has collaborated on both private and public commissions, including projects for Fisher-Price, medical centers, restaurants, libraries, and schools. A recent commission at the Hauptmann-Woodward Institute led her to create pieces inspired by cellular structures and proteins related to cancer and diabetes research. Beyond murals, Martin has illustrated award-winning children’s books, including The Scariest Dream Ever (2007), and an upcoming historical book on the Kenan Center, a former Victorian mansion turned arts and cultural center. Her exhibition history includes solo and group shows in Toronto, Key West, Tribeca, Southampton, and institutions such as the Burchfield Penney Art Center, the Albright-Knox Collectors Gallery, and Canisius College. With deep ties to Spanish and Latin American artistic traditions, Martin’s travels through Europe, particularly Barcelona and the Catalan region, as well as her time in Brazil’s Mata Atlântica rainforests, have greatly influenced her work. Currently, Martin is exhibiting large-scale figurative paintings with Drew Marc Gallery. Her recent series captures the elegance and fluidity of female ballerinas and dancers set against the lush and evocative backdrop of the Florida landscape. Artist Statement:“My work is an exploration of movement, energy, and the natural world, infused with the human form. I have always been drawn to the expressive power of the figure—its grace, strength, and emotion. In my recent series, I merge this fascination with the vibrancy of the Florida landscape, creating large-scale pieces that capture the fluidity of dance and the organic rhythm of nature. Whether painting murals or working on canvas, my process is deeply intuitive, guided by the physicality of brushstrokes, layers of texture, and the interplay of light and color. I want my work to evoke a sense of freedom, vitality, and connection—whether through the poised elegance of a dancer or the dynamic movement of wind through a tropical canopy. Having spent much of my career in collaborative and communal art spaces, I find inspiration in the creative energy of others—painters, sculptors, writers, and performers. These interactions continuously shape my artistic voice, pushing me to explore new forms of storytelling through paint. My current body of work at Drew Marc Gallery reflects this journey, celebrating the harmony between the human spirit and the landscapes that surround us.”
