Matthew Boyle is a painter based in both New York City and St. Petersburg, Florida, whose work is deeply influenced by his architectural background. He earned a Bachelor of Design in Architecture from the University of Florida, where he developed an interest in the Situationist International movement, abstract concepts in art and architecture, and urban landscapes. Boyle’s artistic journey began in childhood, drawing over old structural steel blueprints and winning the St. Pete Festival of States sidewalk art contest as a young teenager. After graduating from St. Petersburg High School’s International Baccalaureate program with a focus on visual arts, he pursued architectural studies at the University of Florida. In 2001, he embarked on a transformative journey by hopping a freight train to New York City, deepening his fascination with counterculture and urban life. During his 12-year tenure teaching music, art, and creative coding in East Harlem, Boyle continued to paint and exhibit his work. Currently, he focuses on large-scale oil paintings, exhibiting in both New York City and Florida. Artist Statement:My paintings delve into abstract expressionist explorations of object-field relationships, often alluding to urban landscapes both in their physical form and psychological impact. Drawing inspiration from the poetic works of John Hejduk, Lebbeus Woods, the Situationists, and contemporary artists like Marigold Santos and Rajni Perera, I aim to craft mythologies within my work, each accompanied by a distinct visual language. My compositions frequently juxtapose architectural elements, human figures, and animals against unfamiliar terrains, suggesting significant shifts in natural norms and a fusion of self with environment. I am captivated by the effects of time on our constructions, monuments, and nature, leading me to envision the lasting imprints humanity leaves on the planet, both present and future. Employing oil and acrylic mediums, my process involves intensive layering and masking techniques. This approach mirrors the incessant architectural reconfigurations within our cities, with layers of paint concealing and revealing conceptual underpinnings, blending precise geometric lines with freeform, gestural shapes. In my latest series, I incorporate new tools and mediums to emulate the uninhibited nature of drawing, introducing greater variation in line weight and scale.
