MEGAN MAGILL (American b. Chicago 1970-)Painter I am interested in moments of connection and exploring the space and energy within these moments as that is where the mystery is for me. I’m here thinking one thing, and you’re thinking another and how does that show up in what’s happening around us. This is central to what I am interested in painting and in how I approach the process of painting itself. In order to make a painting, I lean into messages from places that I can’t see but yet somehow need to learn to trust. I start with an idea, and often an image, but rely on gut feelings and intuition to realize the painting in its final form. For me painting is a process that reinforces, as it necessitates, not being afraid of things that are only in your imagination. By allowing myself the liberty to not always know where I am heading, I am able to find moments of connection between myself and the painting that ultimately help shape its meaning. Megan Magill’s studio practice embraces drawing, printmaking, and photography as steppingstones and conspirators to her whimsical paintings. Through a process that involves found imagery, improvised methods and a reliance on chance her work pays homage to all that is strange and wonderful in our lives. Her work has been profiled at the Center for Maine Contemporary Art, in a publication of Create Magazine at Art Basel and on Artsy. She received a Master's Degree from Northwestern University and her MFA from Maine Media College in Rockport Maine. Magill has shown throughout the US and works out of her studio in Brooksville, Maine SELECTED EXHIBITIONS 2024 Matinee -Cynthia Winnings -Blue Hill Maine2024 Foundations Art Fair on Artsy-James May Gallery2023 Swim -Gallery B -Castine Maine2022 Solo Show- James May Gallery- Milwaukee2022 Cynthia Winnings- Blue Hill Maine2020 Bridegport Biennial Competition-Chicago2020 Art from the Heartland-Indianapolis2018 Direct Contact-Cynthia Winnings Gallery- Blue Hill, Maine2018 Billions of Particles-The Saw Room Chicago2017 The Wedge Gallery-Chicago2017 Momentary Certainties-Pho Pa Gallery-Portland Maine2017 Size Matters-Helmuth Projects-San Diego2017 We Like Small Things-Filter Photo Space-chicago-Sept -Oct AWARDS 2017 First Place Representational Work- Bridgeport Art Center-Chicago2017 Semi-finalist 91st Annual International Competition-The Print Center Philadelphia PUBLICATIONS 2020 Pikchur Magazine Feature2018 Create Magazine: Two-Year Anniversary/Miami Edition Selected Artist2018 Raven Chronicles: a journal of Art Literature and the Spoken Word Vol. 25 Contributing Artist2017 American A B C D: Authors, Interpreters and Composers- Paripe Books featured artist2020 Lush-Hush- Center for Maine Contemporary Art2017 New Directions artist feature-Detroit Center for Contemporary Photography
