From a young age, Isabelle Scheltjens was drawn to the world of art, a passion that led her to study at SISA, the Antwerp City Institute for Decorative Arts and Crafts. It was her husband, Dirk Neefs, whose glasswork first sparked her fascination with the medium. Inspired, she embarked on a journey of relentless experimentation, meticulously assembling countless fragments of colored glass. Over years of dedication, she refined her technique, mastering the delicate balance of color and light.Scheltjens developed a groundbreaking glass-fusing method, where pieces of glass in varying hues, sizes, and textures are melted together at approximately 800°C. Like the pointillists who built images through dots of paint, she constructs portraits from abstract compositions—chaotic up close, yet lifelike from a distance. Her work captures an extraordinary dance of light and shadow, where color is not just seen but felt. Through her technique, she transforms ordinary fragments into luminous portraits that shift and evolve with perspective. Depending on the eye of the beholder, her images may dissolve into vibrant mosaics or resolve into crisp, monochromatic forms—a testament to the power of perception and the boundless possibilities of glass as an artistic medium.
