Hugh Daly was raised in an artistic family and was encouraged to paint, draw, and explore his creative energies from an early age. Life in the nurturing and creative Daly household provided the perfect backdrop for studying and practicing art. Just as important, it encouraged Hugh to value art as a means of self-expression. Hugh studied art at the University of Texas at Austin, graduating with a BFA in art history and a minor in studio art. He currently pushes paint around his canvases at his home studio in Englewood, Colorado. “Over the past few years I’ve discovered an affinity for collage as an element in my paintings, using randomly dissected loose lines, organic shapes, value and color, as vehicles for discovery. Intuitively painting, drawing and collaging layer over layer, new images emerge from beneath. These images are captured and manipulated, then often forced to recede yet again beneath a new layer of paint, lines, and collage until a harmonious balance has been achieved between figure and ground, between image and content. I sometimes choose to incorporate representational elements into my work — people, animals, architecture, nature, typography — which embody personal homages to significant thoughts, dreams, places and points in time.”
