Nathanael Gray’s large scale impasto paintings are typically created in the landscape. His use of abstraction, mark making, and color takes influence from impressionism, post impressionism, and abstract expressionism. Nathanael has become known for his spontaneous interpretation of both the California and New Mexico landscape, often completing paintings in just over an hour. His work is featured at Kay Contemporary Art in Santa Fe, NM where he shows a mix of California and Southwest paintings. In September 2023 he had an exhibition with sculpture artist Kevin Box titled Nature’s Architecture. His work is also represented at Elliott Fouts Gallery in Sacramento, CA where he has had three solo exhibitions: A Year in Tahoe, 2020, I Only Went Out for a Walk, 2021, and From the Delta to the Sea, 2022, and at Piper J Gallery in Truckee, CA. Nathanael’s work has been featured in American Art Collector, Western Art Collector, Art & Antiques, Outdoor painter.com, and the Nocturne Podcast. Artist Statement: The act of being in a place, connecting and resonating deeply with nature, the earth - this is the core of my art practice. It is a physical expression of my inward reality connecting with the external forces of nature. I paint outdoors as a meditation.
