Sébastien Boko (b. 1984, Zogbodomey, Benin) is a contemporary artist whose sculptural practice draws deeply from his cultural heritage and the traditions of Gélèdè culture. Working across semi-figurative and abstract forms, he explores themes of identity, power, spirituality, and the human condition through a materially rich and symbolically layered visual language. Raised within a family of sculptors, Boko’s early formation was shaped by both inherited knowledge and lived experience. His practice has been further informed by collaborations with artists such as Dominic Zinkpè and through participation in international residencies, which have expanded the scope of his conceptual and material approach. Boko’s sculptures are characterised by their use of mixed media and their engagement with symbolic systems rooted in West African cosmologies. His works operate as sites of encounter between memory and matter, where ancestral presence, ritual knowledge, and contemporary realities intersect. Through this interplay, he creates forms that are at once poetic and introspective, inviting viewers to reflect on the transmission of intangible heritage and the evolving nature of identity. His work has been exhibited internationally across Africa, Europe, and Asia, including presentations in France, Austria, Switzerland, Turkey, China, Japan, Tanzania, Senegal, Mali, Côte d’Ivoire, Togo, and the Netherlands. Notable exhibitions include Africa Now at OpenArtExchange in the Netherlands, as well as participation in 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair New York (2025) with The Southern Art Hub (then The African Art Hub). Boko’s practice situates itself within a broader discourse shaped by memory, spirituality, and cultural transmission. Through his sculptural language, he engages with questions of identity and transformation, contributing to a deeper understanding of how ancestral knowledge continues to inform contemporary artistic expression.
