Barrick, a contemporary impressionist painter, is a representational expressionist whose work often spills gently into abstraction. Inspired by the complexity of creation and the brevity of life, Barrick's plein air sketches are completed alla prima on location. Painting directly from nature allows her to capture the mood of a transitory moment infused with light and color. Her works have been described as "alive and filled with movement." Barrick began drawing and painting as a child; a thread woven into adulthood. Following a successful career in banking, Barrick sought a deeper connection in her life through academics by then completing one Masters Program while simultaneously attending Vanderbilt Divinity School. All roads less-traveled led to a full time commitment to the passion for painting that is now her life. Primarily self-taught, Barrick has also studied briefly with a variety of accomplished western artists, including Camille Przewodek, Skip Whitcomb, and Matt Smith. An award-winning artist, Barrick is also a sought after instructor teaching workshops in still life and plein air painting. A native of Colorado and resident of Tennessee, Barrick travels west frequently and maintains homes in both states. Her numerous artworks are held in private and corporate collections from coast to coast and in Europe including Anchorage, Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Manhattan, Nantucket, Los Angeles, and Frankfurt, Germany. Barrick is a passionate supporter of the land she loves to paint and has given generously to local environmental/preservation groups as an artist and board member including, The Nature Conservancy, The Continental Divide Land Trust, The Land Trust for Tennessee, Radnor Lake Natural Area, The Warner Parks, The Hermitage, and Belle Meade Plantation. In 2001 she founded The Chestnut Group, "Plein Air Painters for the Land," a non-profit group of 130+ artists, dedicated to preserving open spaces.
